Do you freeze during interviews? Maybe, you don’t know what to say in an interview and the harder you think the tougher it is to find the words you’re looking for. Unfortunately, it has happened to most of us at some point, but why at the moment that we’ve been waiting for to give our speech do we end up drawing a blank? There are many reasons. For one, you are in a high stress environment. Everything you do and say is looked at under a microscope. You have only an hour to prove to your interviewer that you are worthy of their time. With all these thoughts bouncing around in your head it is no wonder you stumble with your words.
RELAX - Take a deep breath and relax. It’s interesting how you can give a great speech to yourself in a mirror hours before, but as soon as you are in the hot seat you forget your last name. You just have to take it easy. When I am on my way to an interview I usually clear my head of everything for a minute. You could focus on your breathing or maybe just close your eyes and think of something peaceful in your head. Only then can you begin to focus on your interview.
FOCUS - The real culprit for your lack of words is a loss of focus. Once you have calmed down and relaxed you can begin to regain your focus on the interview at hand. The problem is not that you don’t have anything to say, you and I both know you have a lot in your head, it’s just that there is so much going on in your head you can’t think clearly enough to focus on the thoughts you want.
The next time you have problems getting your thoughts together just relax. I know this is difficult to do during an interview, but you can actually create time during an interview to get your thoughts together. One way to do this is to clear your mind while the interviewer is talking. When asked a question that you do not have a complete answer to, don’t worry. Take a minute, relax and get control of your thoughts. If you need to, you could repeat the question to stall for time. You will see that what you are trying to say will just pop right in your head as long as you relax.
