For many people, going to a car dealership is a nightmare. Salesmen in your face as soon as you get in asking “is there any particular vehicle you’re interested in?” All you have to do is tell them which car you like and the next thing you know you’re sitting at a desk with sales figures written all over the paper in front of you.
It doesn’t have to be like that. Negotiating the price of a car is a slow and carefully thought out process if you want to get the best deal.
Assuming you found the car you want all you have to do is follow these three simple tricks and the price will magically drop.
Come Prepared
Before going to a dealership, try and find your model car for a lower price. The best way to do this is to check out listings in your area with Cars.com or Vehix.com. Print out the listing with the sales price of the other car that’s similar to yours. If you’re having a hard time negotiating the price of your car you can always show them that sheet of paper as a last resort and tell them to match the price or you’ll just go and purchase the other car.
Waiting
Once you’ve started negotiating a price with the dealer, just remember to take your time there and wait. It sounds a lot easier than it is when you’ve already test driven your vehicle and they’re dangling the keys in your face. The dealer knows that the longer it takes to make a deal the less profit they’re going to make. It’s in your best interest to stall any negotiation. Just remember, the price can only go down from here.
Leave
Never buy a car without leaving the negotiating table once. The last thing a dealer wants is for you to leave and have the car sit on their lot taking up space. Use this when you feel the negotiating is coming to an end and it has become too difficult to lower the price any further.
Make sure to take your time walking out and sit in your car for a minute or two. It’s funny how almost every time the salesman will come rushing out to give you a lower figure on the price of the car. If they don’t come and get you, then you know you did a good job and that they really can’t go any lower. At that point it’s best to decide if you want to take it at that price or leave it.
Just remember: the money is in your hands, don’t give it away for free.
