Public accounting is a tough field to get into and it takes a certain caliber person to be successful in that field. We’ve all heard about how partners in public accounting firms have it easy and make the big bucks; and it’s true. However, we usually don’t hear how they got where they are. It takes a lot of sacrifice to be highly successful in public accounting. The first thing you have to do before entering that profession is decide if the sacrifice is even worth it? You may find out that it isn’t the type of life you want to lead or maybe it is.
Sacrifice
How much of your free time are you willing to sacrifice? To succeed in public accounting you shouldn’t be counting the amount of time you spend at work. It’s more about finishing your task and moving onto the next one. In case you didn’t know, partners always check the billable hours their employees have and of course the ones who consistently have the most billable hours will be looked upon favorably. It doesn’t stop there because not only do you need to record a lot of billable hours, but you also have to be efficient with your hours. Partners don’t want to overcharge their clients because you took to long doing your work. They can’t run the risk of losing clients because of you. So, make sure to rack up those billable hours because they are the only time at work that count and use them efficiently. Your hard work won’t go unnoticed, especially since associates seem to come and go like a revolving door.
Keep At It
Sticking it out may be the simplest advice to being successful in public accounting. All you have to do is last long enough and you’ll end up being promoted just because you’re there. It will seem like just plain luck that you’re being promoted, but in actuality you’re being promoted because you stuck it out and you’re the most senior employee. Seniority has a lot of pull when everyone else quits after a few years. However, as much of a pull as it is, seniority won’t be enough to make partner.
Passion
Ultimately, all of the sacrifice you give and the length of time you stay at a firm will not bother you if you’re passionate about public accounting. You really have to enjoy the work you do, otherwise your job will be 100x more stressful, annoying and boring. I guarantee you will not be successful or last long enough to be successful if you don’t have a passion for public accounting. If you are passionate about the work then go for it. Passion is what will drive you to produce high quality work, come up with better ideas, and ultimately make you a partner before anyone else.
